Green Tiger Lotus

Nymphaea lotus Green

📍 West Africa

Ask Finn

Nymphaea lotus Green is a stunning aquatic lily with deep green, rounded leaves that can reach 4-6 inches in diameter. This rooted stem plant produces both submerged and emergent foliage, making it an excellent focal point for midground to background placement. Under good lighting, it may produce delicate white or pink flowers above the water surface.

Common Diseases

Melt on Transition

Symptoms

Leaves turn translucent, mushy, or dissolve shortly after planting; particularly common when moving from emersed to fully submerged growth

Treatment

Gradually acclimate the plant to submerged conditions over 2-3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters and high light; new submerged leaves will emerge healthy

Iron Deficiency (Chlorosis)

Symptoms

Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green; stunted growth and pale coloration

Treatment

Dose liquid iron fertilizer (chelated iron) 2-3 times weekly; ensure adequate lighting and CO2; check that substrate contains iron-rich components

Algae on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced photosynthesis and aesthetic appeal

Treatment

Increase water circulation and reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours daily; manually remove algae with soft brush; add algae-eating shrimp or fish; reduce excess nutrients

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Soft, blackened, or mushy rhizome base; foul odor; leaf yellowing and wilting despite good conditions

Treatment

Improve water circulation and reduce organic detritus buildup; ensure substrate is not compacted; perform partial water changes; remove severely affected portions with sterile tools
