Heteranthera Zosterifolia
Heteranthera zosterifolia
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Pontederiaceae
📍 South America
Also known as stargrass, heteranthera zosterifolia has compact star-shaped leaf clusters around each stem, creating a distinctive texture unlike most aquarium plants. It branches freely when trimmed and creates lush, dense mid-background clusters under good lighting.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters that won't damage plant tissue and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-aggressive fish that thrive in planted tanks with similar water parameters
Beneficial invertebrates that consume algae and detritus without harming plants
Complementary foreground plant that creates layered aquascaping with Stargrass
Hardy companion plant with different growth pattern and leaf structure for visual contrast
Peaceful cichlid that appreciates planted environments but may uproot plants during breeding
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches
Increase fertilizer dosing, ensure CO2 supplementation, test and adjust macronutrient and micronutrient levels, perform partial water changes to reset nutrient balance
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating plant surfaces, reduced light penetration, plant decay
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected leaves, improve water circulation
Root Rot
Mushy stems, blackened base, foul odor, plant collapse despite good water conditions
Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste accumulation, trim affected portions, increase water circulation, consider substrate replacement if severe
Melting
Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or gelatinous appearance, plant deterioration over days
Acclimate plant gradually to new tank conditions, maintain stable water parameters, ensure adequate CO2 and nutrients, trim damaged portions and allow recovery time
