Heteranthera Zosterifolia

Heteranthera zosterifolia

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaPontederiaceae

📍 South America

Ask Finn

Also known as stargrass, heteranthera zosterifolia has compact star-shaped leaf clusters around each stem, creating a distinctive texture unlike most aquarium plants. It branches freely when trimmed and creates lush, dense mid-background clusters under good lighting.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing, ensure CO2 supplementation, test and adjust macronutrient and micronutrient levels, perform partial water changes to reset nutrient balance

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating plant surfaces, reduced light penetration, plant decay

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected leaves, improve water circulation

Root Rot

Symptoms

Mushy stems, blackened base, foul odor, plant collapse despite good water conditions

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste accumulation, trim affected portions, increase water circulation, consider substrate replacement if severe

Melting

Symptoms

Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or gelatinous appearance, plant deterioration over days

Treatment

Acclimate plant gradually to new tank conditions, maintain stable water parameters, ensure adequate CO2 and nutrients, trim damaged portions and allow recovery time
