Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Polypodiaceae
Variety of Java Fern · trident
📍 Southeast Asia (cultivar)
The trident java fern is a cultivar with deeply lobed, multi-pronged fronds that create an elegant, fern-like silhouette. Like all java ferns it attaches to hardscape and requires no substrate. Very low-maintenance and suitable for low-tech tanks.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage delicate fern fronds and benefit from the plant's shelter
Small, gentle schooling fish that create minimal disturbance and thrive in low-tech planted tanks
Excellent algae control without damaging plants; creates a balanced, low-maintenance ecosystem
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and growth rate; creates natural aquascaping
Complementary low-light plant that pairs well with Trident fern for layered aquascaping
Peaceful, low-bioload fish that won't uproot or damage the fern's delicate structure
Common Diseases
Rhizome Rot
Blackening or softening of the rhizome (root-like structure), mushy texture, foul odor, frond wilting despite adequate water
Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup; trim affected portions with sterile scissors; ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate; perform 25% water changes weekly
Algae Overgrowth (Black Beard Algae)
Dark, hair-like algae coating fronds; reduced photosynthesis; fronds appear dulled or covered in fuzzy growth
Manually remove affected fronds; increase water circulation; reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily; add algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry); consider hydrogen peroxide spot treatment (1-2 ml per 10 gallons)
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale fronds; stunted growth; new fronds emerging small or deformed; overall plant decline despite adequate light
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer weekly; increase fish bioload through feeding; perform 25% water changes to replenish trace minerals; ensure adequate lighting (low-medium, 6-8 hours daily)
Melting (Leaf Deterioration)
Fronds becoming translucent, dissolving, or turning to mush; rapid loss of plant mass; occurs after major water changes or environmental stress
Maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 20-28°C); avoid drastic water changes; ensure gradual acclimation to new tanks; trim dead tissue and allow plant to recover; reduce lighting temporarily
