L081 Gold Nugget Pleco Medium Spot
Baryancistrus sp. L081
📍 South America
The L081 Gold Nugget Pleco is a stunning nocturnal catfish featuring a dark body covered in bright yellow or gold spots, making it highly sought after by aquarists. This medium-sized pleco is endemic to South American river systems and requires well-maintained, spacious aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. They are generally peaceful but territorial with other plecos and can be challenging to care for due to their specific water parameter requirements.
Care Guide
Diet
Feed a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini and cucumber. Supplement with occasional protein sources like bloodworms or shrimp pellets 2-3 times weekly. Feed primarily at night when the pleco is most active, offering only what can be consumed in a few hours.
Behavior
L081 Gold Nuggets are nocturnal and spend most daylight hours hiding in caves, driftwood, or dense vegetation. They are generally solitary and territorial, particularly toward other plecos of similar size. At night they become more active, foraging along the substrate and consuming algae and decaying plant matter.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require specific cave structures, optimal water conditions, and large tank volumes to even attempt spawning. Professional breeders have had limited success, making captive-bred specimens rare and highly valuable.
Tank Mates
Bottom dwellers that occupy different ecological niches and rarely compete
Peaceful mid-water swimmers that do not interfere with pleco behavior
Can be territorial; only house if tank is large enough with multiple caves
Small algae eaters that occupy similar niches but are non-competitive
Peaceful schooling fish that prefer mid-water and do not bother plecos
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Increase water temperature gradually to 28-30°C (82-86°F), perform frequent water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; maintain excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform 50% water changes every 2-3 days, improve water quality, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure adequate hiding spaces to reduce stress
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading, torn fins
Isolate in hospital tank if possible, perform daily water changes, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain pristine water parameters
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, weight loss despite feeding, visible parasites, cloudy appearance
Use anti-parasitic medication appropriate for plecos, quarantine affected fish, increase water changes, avoid overfeeding
