L177 Gold Nugget Pleco
Baryancistrus sp. L177
📍 South America
The L177 Gold Nugget Pleco is a stunning nocturnal catfish featuring a dark body covered in bright yellow or gold spots and markings. This species is highly sought after by experienced aquarists for its striking appearance and interesting behavior. They are primarily herbivorous and require well-established tanks with plenty of hiding spaces and driftwood.
Care Guide
Diet
Gold Nugget Plecos are primarily herbivorous and wood-eaters that require substantial amounts of driftwood for rasping and digestion. Supplement their diet with high-quality sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), and algae wafers 3-4 times weekly. Provide fresh driftwood regularly as they consume it as part of their natural diet.
Behavior
These are nocturnal bottom-dwellers that spend most daylight hours hiding in caves, under driftwood, or in dense vegetation. They become more active during evening and night hours when they forage for food and explore their territory. Gold Nuggets are generally solitary and territorial with other plecos, so they should be housed individually or with careful monitoring.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very specific water conditions, large territories, and cave systems to spawn. Successful breeding typically requires professional-level expertise and specialized breeding setups with minimal disturbance.
Tank Mates
Similar water requirements and peaceful bottom-dwelling behavior
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that won't compete for bottom space
Peaceful schooling fish that occupy different water zones
Both are algae-eaters; ensure sufficient food and space to avoid competition
May compete for territory and food; only house if tank is very large with multiple caves
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Increase temperature gradually to 28-30°C (82-86°F), use aquarium salt at recommended doses, perform frequent water changes, treat with medication if necessary
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, remove decaying food and waste, treat with antibacterial medication, ensure adequate aeration
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, ulcers on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform large water changes, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibacterial treatment, isolate if severely affected
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins, lethargy
Use anti-parasitic medication, increase water changes, quarantine affected fish, treat entire tank if infestation is widespread
