Giant Ambulia
Limnophila aquatica
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Plantaginaceae
📍 Sri Lanka and South India
Lush, feathery stem plant with large whorls of finely divided leaves. Fast-growing background plant that creates a spectacular bushy effect. Needs good light and CO2.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage plant tissue and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-destructive fish that thrive in planted tanks and appreciate the dense vegetation
Beneficial invertebrates that consume algae and won't uproot or damage delicate plant structures
Gentle cichlid that appreciates planted environments; may occasionally dig but unlikely to uproot established stems
Excellent companion plant with similar water parameter requirements; creates layered aquascape
Foreground plant that complements Giant Ambulia's background placement and shares similar nutrient needs
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes, or necrotic spots on older leaves
Increase fertilizer dosing, ensure adequate lighting (8-10 hours daily), and verify CO2 injection if using pressurized system. Test water parameters and adjust macronutrient and micronutrient supplementation accordingly
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating plant surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, plant deterioration
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, perform 30-50% water changes weekly, introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp, and ensure adequate CO2 levels to favor plant growth over algae
Melting
Rapid leaf deterioration, mushy stems, translucent appearance, plant collapse within days
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, ensure stable temperature (23-28°C), increase CO2 and nutrient supplementation, and remove severely affected portions. Melting often occurs during acclimation to new tank conditions
Bacterial Rot
Blackened or mushy stems, foul odor, progressive decay of plant tissue
Remove affected plant portions immediately, perform 50% water change, improve water circulation with aeration, reduce organic waste through regular maintenance, and avoid overcrowding
