Longfin Bristlenose Pleco
Ancistrus sp.
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Bristlenose Pleco · longfin
📍 South America
The Longfin Bristlenose Pleco has flowing, extended fins while retaining the same algae-eating habits and peaceful temperament as the standard form. The long fins are delicate and benefit from smooth decor and gentle flow.
Care Guide
Diet
Longfin Bristlenose Plecos are primarily herbivorous algae-eaters that supplement with vegetable matter. Feed high-quality algae wafers or spirulina pellets 3-4 times weekly, supplemented with blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. Occasional protein sources such as frozen bloodworms or small amounts of sinking pellets support growth, especially for juveniles.
Behavior
These peaceful, nocturnal plecos are less active during daylight hours but become more mobile at night while grazing and exploring. They are solitary and territorial toward other plecos but generally ignore other fish species. The extended fins are delicate and require careful handling; they may become torn in tanks with sharp décor or aggressive water flow.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions including caves or PVC pipes for spawning, stable temperatures around 26-28°C, and pristine water quality. Males guard eggs and fry for 7-10 days after hatching. Successful breeding is uncommon in home aquaria due to the need for ideal conditions and the species' slow growth rate.
Tank Mates
Similar algae-eating habits and peaceful temperament; minimal competition for resources
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that occupies different tank zones; avoid aggressive rams
Schooling fish that stay in mid-water column; non-aggressive and compatible with plecos
Peaceful schooling fish that won't nip delicate fins; prefers gentle water flow
Excellent algae control partner; large enough to avoid predation by the pleco
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, scratching against décor, labored breathing
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt or ich medication; maintain excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Fraying or deterioration of fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, lethargy
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, remove sharp décor, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; ensure gentle water flow to prevent further damage
Bacterial Infections
Sores or lesions on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, fin clamping
Perform 50% water change, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain stable temperature and pristine water conditions
Malnutrition
Stunted growth, pale coloration, lethargy, reduced algae consumption
Provide varied diet including quality algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein; ensure adequate feeding frequency and tank maintenance
