PlantaeTracheophytaPolypodiopsidaSalvinialesMarsileaceae

📍 Australia

Ask Finn

Low-growing fern that forms a carpet of narrow, single or double-lobed leaves. Very easy and adaptable foreground plant.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf melting or deterioration

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing (macro and micronutrient formulas), ensure adequate lighting, and consider adding root tabs if substrate is inert

Algae Overgrowth on Leaves

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating plant surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, leaf decay

Treatment

Increase water changes, reduce lighting duration, add algae-eating fish or shrimp (Otocinclus, Amano Shrimp), and manually remove affected leaves

Melting

Symptoms

Leaves becoming translucent, mushy texture, rapid deterioration of plant tissue

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, ensure stable temperature (23-28°C), increase CO2 if available, and remove dead tissue to prevent decay

Root Rot

Symptoms

Black or mushy roots, foul odor from substrate, plant detachment from substrate, overall decline

Treatment

Improve substrate aeration, reduce organic waste buildup, perform water changes, and ensure adequate water circulation with gentle filtration
