Marsilea Minuta
Marsilea minuta
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Marsileaceae
📍 Asia, Africa, Australia (widespread)
The smallest Marsilea species commonly available, producing miniscule two-leaf forms when submerged that create an incredibly fine, lawn-like carpet. Its wide geographic distribution makes it very adaptable to different water conditions. Under high light it carpets tightly to the substrate; in lower light, petioles elongate as the plant reaches for the surface. One of the most low-maintenance carpeting options available — more forgiving than HC Cuba or E. Belem.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that will not uproot or damage delicate carpet plants
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without disturbing plant structure; enhance carpet aesthetics
Complementary foreground plant with similar light and nutrient requirements; creates layered carpet effect
Small, peaceful fish that navigate around carpet without uprooting; minimal bioload
Excellent algae control and plant-safe; will not damage or consume healthy carpet plants
Similar foreground plant with comparable care requirements; creates dense, attractive carpet combination
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, sparse carpet formation, leaf necrosis starting at leaf margins
Introduce liquid all-in-one fertilizer or macronutrient supplements; add root tabs if substrate lacks nutrients; increase light intensity to improve photosynthesis efficiency
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating plant surfaces, reduced light penetration to lower leaves, plant appears smothered
Increase water circulation, reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours daily, manually remove algae with soft brush, introduce algae-eating shrimp or fish like Amano Shrimp or Otocinclus
Melting (Leaf Dissolution)
Leaves become translucent, mushy, or dissolve rapidly; usually occurs after sudden environmental changes
Ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 18–30°C); acclimate plants gradually to new tanks; improve water circulation and reduce excess organic matter; trim affected leaves
Poor Growth or Carpet Failure
Slow or no horizontal growth, sparse coverage, leaves remain small and weak despite adequate light
Verify light intensity (6-8 hours daily minimum); add CO₂ supplementation if available; dose fertilizers weekly; ensure substrate contains organic matter or add root tabs; check water parameters for stability
