Neolamprologus leleupi
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cichlidae
📍 Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Brilliant yellow Tanganyikan cichlid that lives in rocky crevices. Curious and bold but aggressive toward its own kind. Stunning in a rock-heavy Tanganyika biotope.
Care Guide
Diet
Lemon Cichlids are carnivorous and require high-protein foods including quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small live foods. Feed small portions once daily, adjusting quantity based on fish size and tank bioload. Occasional vegetable matter like blanched spinach can supplement their diet.
Behavior
Bold and curious, Lemon Cichlids are active mid-water swimmers that spend considerable time exploring rocky crevices and caves. They are highly territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics, requiring individual housing or very large tanks with multiple hiding spots. Males are particularly aggressive during breeding season.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires stable water conditions, plenty of caves, and a bonded pair. They are substrate spawners that lay eggs in rocky crevices and exhibit strong parental care. Fry are relatively easy to raise once free-swimming if fed quality foods like infusoria and micro pellets.
Tank Mates
Nocturnal bottom-dweller that avoids conflict; shares rocky habitat preference
Similar size and temperament; both prefer caves and rocky environments
Both are territorial; requires careful tank design with separate territories
Algae control without competing for food; hard shell deters predation
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against rocks
Raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform water changes, use ich medication; maintain excellent water quality
Hole-in-the-Head (Hexamita)
Pits or holes developing on head, loss of appetite, lethargy
Improve water quality, reduce stress, use metronidazole treatment; ensure varied diet with quality foods
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges
Perform frequent water changes, maintain pristine conditions, use antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Sores, ulcers, or cloudy patches on body; behavioral changes
Isolate if possible, improve water quality, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment
