Parkinsoni Rainbowfish
Melanotaenia parkinsoni
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Melanotaeniidae
📍 Kemp Welch River system, Papua New Guinea
Parkinson's rainbowfish is a large, spectacular species with males displaying a golden-yellow to orange anterior transitioning into a blue-grey posterior, with vivid yellow fins edged in black. One of the most colourful and striking of all rainbowfish. It is a hardy, active species best kept in a long, spacious aquarium.
Care Guide
Diet
Parkinsoni rainbowfish are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality pellets and flake foods supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Occasional vegetable matter like blanched spinach supports digestive health.
Behavior
These are active, peaceful schooling fish that display vibrant coloration, especially in males under good lighting conditions. They are mid-water swimmers that prefer to move in groups and become stressed when kept singly or in small numbers. Males may display mild aggression toward each other, but this is rarely serious in properly sized tanks with adequate space.
Breeding
Breeding Parkinsoni rainbowfish in captivity is possible but requires patience and specific conditions including slightly acidic to neutral water, dense vegetation for egg scattering, and careful separation of fry. Spawning typically occurs in early morning hours, and eggs hatch in 7-10 days with fry becoming free-swimming shortly after. Success rates improve with conditioning pairs on live foods before breeding attempts.
Tank Mates
Similar size, temperament, and water requirements; compatible schooling behavior
Peaceful rainbowfish species with overlapping water parameter needs
Bottom-dwelling peaceful catfish that occupy different water zones and aid tank cleanliness
Peaceful schooling fish with similar temperature and pH preferences
Small peaceful schoolers that thrive in comparable water conditions without competing for space
Nocturnal algae eater that doesn't compete with rainbowfish and helps maintain tank cleanliness
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against surfaces, lethargy
Raise water temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment; maintain for 10-14 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, progressive fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, remove any sharp tank decorations, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure water parameters remain stable
Columnaris (Flexibacter columnaris)
White or grayish film on body or mouth, loss of appetite, isolation from school, rapid gill movement
Increase aeration, perform daily 50% water changes, use antibiotic medication designed for columnaris; quarantine affected fish if possible
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins, cloudy eyes
Use anti-parasitic medication following label directions, increase water changes, maintain optimal water quality; quarantine new fish before adding to main tank
