Phoenix Rasbora
Boraras merah
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cypriniformes›Cyprinidae
📍 Borneo, Indonesia
A stunningly coloured micro rasbora with a deep red body and dark lateral markings. One of the best nano fish available, it schools tightly and looks spectacular against dark substrates and green plants. Extremely peaceful.
Care Guide
Diet
Phoenix Rasboras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables like spinach to ensure balanced nutrition.
Behavior
These tiny, schooling fish are most active and vibrant when kept in groups of at least 8, displaying their brilliant red-orange coloration and engaging in constant foraging behavior. They are peaceful and prefer mid-water zones, rarely venturing to the substrate or surface. They exhibit minimal aggression toward other species and spend most of their time in coordinated group movement.
Breeding
Breeding Phoenix Rasboras in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very soft, acidic water (pH 4.0-5.5), dense vegetation for egg scattering, and pristine water conditions with frequent water changes. Fry are extremely small and difficult to rear, requiring infusoria and microscopic foods for the first weeks.
Tank Mates
Similar size and peaceful temperament; excellent algae control without competing for food
Peaceful invertebrates that share similar water parameters and won't prey on adult rasboras
Comparable size, peaceful schooling behavior, and identical water chemistry requirements
Similar nano fish with peaceful temperament; may compete slightly for food but compatible
Foreground plant that provides cover and natural habitat structure without competing for space
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Increase temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform 50% water change immediately, improve water quality with frequent changes, use antibacterial medication if severe; remove any sharp decorations
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of appetite, color fading, torn fins
Perform daily 25% water changes, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment; isolate severely affected fish if possible
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid gill movement, scratching, lethargy
Increase temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily water changes, use copper-free velvet treatment; darken tank to reduce stress
