Six Line Wrasse
Pseudocheilinus hexataenia
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Labridae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reefs
Active and colourful wrasse with six horizontal blue stripes. Pest controller — eats flatworms and small pests. Can be territorial with similar species.
Care Guide
Diet
Six Line Wrasses are carnivorous and require a varied diet of high-quality meaty foods. Offer frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans once daily. They will also consume quality carnivore pellets and benefit from occasional live food to encourage natural hunting behavior.
Behavior
Highly active and energetic fish that constantly forage along rockwork and substrate, making them excellent pest controllers for flatworms and small unwanted invertebrates. They are semi-aggressive and can be territorial with similarly-sized wrasses or fish with comparable body shapes, but generally peaceful toward larger fish and different species.
Breeding
Breeding Six Line Wrasses in captivity is extremely rare and difficult, with no established protocols for home aquarists. They are pelagic spawners that require very large systems and specific environmental triggers unlikely to occur in standard reef tanks. Captive-bred specimens are uncommon; most available fish are wild-caught.
Tank Mates
Similar reef habitat preference and non-competing feeding behavior
Different ecological niche; wrasse may occasionally chase but rarely harms shrimp
Similar size and reef-dwelling habits; monitor for aggression
Different feeding zones and compatible temperament
Small size and different behavior pattern minimize conflict
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against rocks
Raise temperature to 26-27°C, use copper-based medication or UV sterilization; quarantine affected fish
Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE)
Pitting or erosion of head and lateral line, typically from poor nutrition or water quality
Improve water quality, increase feeding frequency with varied high-quality foods, supplement with vitamin-enriched preparations
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, clamped fins, lethargy, visible parasites on gills
Quarantine fish, treat with appropriate antiparasitic medication or freshwater dips; maintain excellent water quality
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite
Improve water quality, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment if severe; ensure adequate nutrition and low stress
