Snowball Pleco
Hypancistrus inspector
📍 South America
The Snowball Pleco is a small, peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish native to South American rivers, prized for its distinctive white spotted pattern on a dark body. This species is nocturnal and prefers heavily planted or cave-rich environments where it can hide during the day. It is an excellent algae eater and detritus consumer, making it valuable for maintaining tank cleanliness in established aquariums.
Care Guide
Diet
Snowball Plecos are primarily herbivorous and algae-eating fish that thrive on quality algae wafers and sinking pellets as their staple diet. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach 2-3 times weekly. Offer frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp occasionally (1-2 times per week) as protein supplements. Feed small amounts once daily in the evening when the fish becomes active.
Behavior
Snowball Plecos are nocturnal and spend most daylight hours hidden in caves, driftwood, or dense vegetation, becoming more active after lights are turned off. They are solitary and peaceful toward other fish but may establish small territories around their favorite hiding spots. These fish are excellent algae controllers and spend much of their active time grazing on surfaces and sifting through substrate.
Breeding
Breeding Snowball Plecos in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved by hobbyists, requiring specific cave structures and pristine water conditions. Males are territorial and will guard breeding caves; females lay small clutches of eggs that males protect until fry become free-swimming. Success requires patience, ideal water parameters, and a dedicated breeding setup with minimal disturbance.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful bottom-dweller; both are algae eaters that coexist without conflict
Compatible bottom-dweller with similar peaceful temperament and feeding habits
Small, peaceful mid-water fish that occupy different zones and do not compete for resources
Peaceful schooling fish that inhabit upper water column, leaving bottom territory undisturbed
Excellent algae-eating companion that shares similar dietary preferences without aggression
Live plant that provides shelter and grazing surfaces; not consumed by Snowball Plecos
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots covering body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against surfaces
Increase water temperature to 28-30°C (82-86°F) gradually, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt at recommended doses, or treat with copper-free ich medication; maintain excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin tissue loss, lethargy
Perform 50% water change immediately, improve water quality and aeration, treat with antibacterial medication or salt baths, ensure pristine tank conditions and remove any sharp decorations
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading, torn fins, behavioral changes
Perform large water changes (50%), treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, isolate if possible, improve water parameters and tank cleanliness, ensure adequate nutrition
Parasitic Infection (Worms)
Weight loss despite feeding, visible worms in feces, lethargy, loss of appetite, bloated appearance
Treat with antiparasitic medication designed for plecos, perform frequent water changes, improve sanitation, quarantine affected fish if possible, ensure proper nutrition and water quality
