Starry Blenny

Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Perciformes›Blenniidae
📍 Indo-Pacific

Care Guide
Diet
Starry Blennies are primarily herbivorous and thrive on a diet of marine algae, seaweed, and algae-based foods. Offer high-quality spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and algae wafers daily, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition. They will graze continuously on live algae in the tank, which should be encouraged as their natural feeding behavior.
Behavior
Starry Blennies are active bottom-dwellers that spend most of their time grazing on rocks and substrate, making them excellent algae controllers. They are peaceful and non-aggressive toward other fish, though they may be territorial with other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling species. These fish are curious and personable, often interacting with aquarists and displaying entertaining behaviors as they explore their environment.
Breeding
Breeding Starry Blennies in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very specific environmental conditions, including appropriate cave structures for spawning and stable water parameters. Success is uncommon even among experienced aquarists, and most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught or commercially bred.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and reef-safe; occupy different tank zones
Both algae grazers but may compete for food; provide ample grazing space
Peaceful invertebrate that occupies different ecological niche
Reef-safe and peaceful; may ignore blenny or form loose associations
Small, peaceful bottom-dweller with similar care requirements
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against rocks
Raise temperature gradually to 26-27°C, maintain excellent water quality, consider copper-based treatments or hyposalinity therapy; quarantine if possible
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin margins, progressive fin loss
Improve water quality and stability, perform regular water changes, use antibiotic treatments if severe; ensure adequate nutrition
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins, behavioral changes
Quarantine affected fish, treat with appropriate antiparasitic medications, maintain pristine water conditions and monitor tank mates
Nutritional Deficiency
Fading coloration, lethargy, poor growth, weakened immune response
Provide varied diet including quality algae foods, spirulina, and occasional frozen foods; ensure adequate feeding frequency
