Tailspot Blenny
Ecsenius stigmatura
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Blenniidae
📍 Philippines, Indonesia
One of the most popular reef blennies — mottled tan with a characteristic black tail spot and expressive eyes. Grazes on algae and is generally reef-safe with corals. Full of personality.
Care Guide
Diet
Tailspot blennies are primarily herbivorous and should be fed a diet rich in algae and vegetable matter. Offer high-quality spirulina flakes or algae wafers daily, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen mysis shrimp or small frozen foods. They will naturally graze on algae growth in the tank, which should be encouraged by maintaining moderate algae levels.
Behavior
This blenny is a bottom-dweller with an inquisitive, personable temperament that makes it popular in reef tanks. It spends most of its time grazing on rocks and substrate, occasionally perching on corals or décor while observing its surroundings with expressive eyes. Generally peaceful with other fish and reef-safe with corals, though it may be territorial toward other blennies in smaller tanks.
Breeding
Breeding tailspot blennies in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and pair bonding that are challenging to replicate. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught, and successful captive breeding is not well-documented.
Tank Mates
Similar reef-safe temperament and compatible water parameters; both peaceful bottom/mid-water dwellers
Reef-safe invertebrate that occupies different ecological niche; minimal competition for food
Peaceful reef invertebrate with no territorial conflicts; both benefit reef ecosystem
Both are blennies and may compete for grazing territory; only in larger tanks (30+ gallons)
Similar peaceful temperament and reef-safe; occupies different habitat zones
Nocturnal reef fish with no territorial overlap; compatible water parameters
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against rocks
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, maintain excellent water quality, use copper-free treatments or hyposalinity if necessary; quarantine infected fish
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, lesions on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform frequent water changes, improve water quality, use antibiotic treatments if severe; ensure adequate nutrition and low stress
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, labored breathing
Quarantine affected fish, use appropriate antiparasitic medications, maintain pristine water conditions; may require freshwater dips
Nutritional Deficiency
Faded coloration, lethargy, poor growth, weakened immune response
Provide varied diet with quality spirulina, algae wafers, and occasional frozen foods; ensure adequate natural algae growth in tank
