Care Guide
Diet
Sunset Honey Gouramis are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables like zucchini to support digestive health.
Behavior
These peaceful, shy fish are most active during dawn and dusk, spending much of their day exploring mid-water levels and the surface. They are labyrinth breathers and will occasionally gulp air at the water's surface. Males may display mild territorial behavior toward each other, but they are generally docile and do well in community settings.
Breeding
Breeding Sunset Honey Gouramis in captivity is possible but requires patience and specific conditions including dense plants, warm water (26-28°C), and low water flow. Males build bubble nests and guard fry, which are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week. Success rates are moderate for experienced aquarists.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and compatible water parameters make them ideal community companions
Peaceful invertebrate that occupies different water zones; may be eaten if very small
Both are gouramis; monitor for territorial disputes, especially during breeding season
Provides shelter and resting spots; hardy plant that won't be uprooted
Creates dense cover for security and fry refuge; supports infusoria for breeding
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial changes, remove any sharp decorations, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure temperature stays 24-26°C
Labyrinth Organ Infection
Difficulty breathing, gasping at surface, swollen gill area, loss of appetite
Maintain pristine water conditions, ensure adequate surface access for air gulping, use broad-spectrum antibiotics if bacterial; avoid sudden temperature fluctuations
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, clamped fins, scratching behavior
Increase temperature to 28°C, perform daily 50% water changes, use copper-free velvet treatment; quarantine affected fish to prevent spread
