Sunshine Pleco
Scobinancistrus aureatus
📍 South America
The Sunshine Pleco is a stunning large pleco species known for its brilliant golden-yellow coloration and impressive size, making it a centerpiece fish for experienced aquarists. This nocturnal bottom-dweller requires substantial tank space and stable water conditions to thrive. It is a peaceful herbivore that feeds primarily on algae wafers and vegetables, though it may occasionally consume driftwood.
Care Guide
Diet
Feed high-quality algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach 3-4 times weekly. Provide driftwood for natural wood consumption and supplemental nutrition. Occasional protein supplementation with sinking pellets is acceptable but should not be the primary diet.
Behavior
The Sunshine Pleco is primarily nocturnal and spends most of the day hidden among driftwood and caves, becoming more active during evening and night hours. This species is solitary and peaceful with other fish, though males may be territorial toward other plecos. They are slow-growing and relatively inactive compared to other fish species, making them excellent for established, stable aquariums.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is extremely rare and has not been reliably documented in home aquariums. They require very large tanks, specific cave structures, and precise water conditions to potentially spawn. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught, and captive breeding remains largely unsuccessful.
Tank Mates
Peaceful bottom-dwellers that occupy different ecological niches and do not compete
Similar peaceful herbivorous nature, though separate territories recommended in large tanks
Small schooling fish that occupy mid-water zone and do not interfere with pleco
Peaceful algae-eaters that share similar dietary preferences but occupy different areas
Hardy plant that provides shelter and is not consumed by this pleco species
Durable plant attachment that provides cover without being damaged by the pleco
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Gradually raise temperature to 28-30°C (82-86°F), perform frequent water changes, use aquarium salt at recommended doses, or treat with ich-specific medications following label instructions
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, progressive fin damage
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, remove decaying driftwood, treat with antibacterial medications, and ensure adequate filtration and aeration
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, ulcers on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, behavioral changes
Perform large water changes, maintain pristine water conditions, treat with broad-spectrum antibacterial medications, and isolate if possible to prevent spread
Parasitic Infection
Excessive mucus coating, rapid gill movement, scratching behavior, weight loss despite feeding
Treat with anti-parasitic medications, increase water changes, maintain optimal water parameters, and quarantine affected fish to prevent transmission
