Taiwan Moss
Taxiphyllum alternans
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnaceae
📍 Taiwan / Southeast Asia
Taiwan Moss is characterised by densely packed, small, round-tipped fronds that grow in a drooping or cascading habit, making it ideal for creating natural-looking hanging mosses on hardscape overhangs. Its fine texture creates a gentler, softer effect than Christmas Moss.
Tank Mates
Shrimp graze on biofilm and algae on moss without damaging the delicate fronds; they benefit from the shelter provided
Larger shrimp that won't harm moss; excellent algae control and biofilm grazing
Small, peaceful algae eaters that appreciate moss as shelter and grazing substrate
Tiny, peaceful fish that use moss as shelter; do not uproot or damage plants
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements; creates dense, natural-looking aquascaping
Slow-growing plant with similar low-light tolerance; complements moss in hardscape layouts
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating moss fronds; reduced water clarity; moss appears smothered
Reduce light duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish (Amano Shrimp, Otocinclus), manually remove algae with a soft brush
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth; pale or yellowing fronds; loss of vibrant coloration
Dose liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients and micronutrients 1-2 times weekly; ensure adequate lighting (low-medium); perform regular water changes
Moss Melt
Fronds become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; browning and deterioration of tissue
Improve water circulation with gentle aeration; reduce excess organic waste through water changes; ensure adequate lighting; check water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 18-28°C)
Bacterial or Fungal Infection
White fuzzy growth on fronds; slimy coating; foul odor; tissue breakdown
Perform 30-50% water change; improve water circulation and oxygenation; remove severely affected portions; avoid overfeeding fish; maintain stable water parameters
