Anchor Moss
Taxiphyllum sp. 'Anchor'
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnales›Hypnaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Dark green moss with downward-curving fronds that anchor themselves to surfaces. Less unruly than Java Moss. Good for aquascaping.
Tank Mates
Will not damage moss; helps control algae without uprooting plants
Small, gentle shrimp that graze biofilm on moss without harming it
Peaceful algae eater that respects plants and creates beneficial biofilm grazing
Small, non-destructive fish that benefit from moss cover and biofilm
Gentle omnivore that will not uproot or consume healthy moss
Companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth; creates layered aquascaping
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating moss surface, reduced light penetration, moss appears smothered
Increase water changes, reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, manually remove excess algae with soft brush
Nutrient Deficiency
Pale or yellowing fronds, stunted growth, loss of dark green coloration
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer weekly, ensure adequate lighting (low-medium), check water parameters for nitrogen and trace elements
Decay and Melting
Moss becomes mushy, brown discoloration, foul odor, visible decomposition
Improve water circulation with gentle flow, increase water change frequency, remove affected portions, ensure substrate is not anaerobic
Black Beard Algae (BBA)
Black or dark red fuzzy growth on moss tips and attachment points, moss appears matted
Reduce photoperiod, increase CO2 if available, manually remove affected moss sections, add algae-eating shrimp, perform frequent water changes
