White Medaka
Oryzias latipes
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Medaka · white
📍 Japan
The White Medaka is a pale white or cream color morph prized for its clean appearance. Hardy and peaceful, it does well in groups in small to medium aquariums and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.
Care Guide
Diet
White Medaka are omnivorous and accept high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. They will also graze on algae and small aquatic organisms in planted tanks.
Behavior
White Medaka are peaceful, schooling fish that do best in groups of 6 or more. They are active swimmers that prefer the upper water column and appreciate open swimming space. They are non-aggressive toward other peaceful species and exhibit minimal territorial behavior.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is relatively easy compared to many fish species. Females will scatter eggs among fine plants or spawning mops in slightly warmer water (24-26°C). Eggs hatch in 7-10 days, and fry are small but can be raised on infusoria and micro foods.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and comparable water requirements make them ideal companions
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy different water zones; medaka may occasionally eat shrimplets
Peaceful algae eaters that share similar water conditions and do not compete for food
Foreground plant that provides spawning sites and shelter without competing for space
Closely related species with identical care requirements and compatible peaceful behavior
Larger shrimp that are less likely to be predated upon; excellent algae control
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, flashing against surfaces, labored breathing
Raise temperature to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or ich medication for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or gray edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove decaying food/plants, use antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication if needed
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins
Quarantine affected fish, treat with anti-parasitic medication, maintain water quality and temperature stability
