Anubias Hastifolia
Anubias hastifolia
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 Africa
Anubias hastifolia is one of the tallest anubias species, with long, spear-shaped leaves that make a dramatic background plant. Like all anubias it attaches to hardscape and is extremely tolerant of low light and neglect. Slow-growing and long-lived.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and benefit from the shelter provided
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't uproot or damage the plant
Small, peaceful schooling fish that appreciate the plant's shelter and won't disturb the rhizome
Bottom-dwelling catfish that won't damage the plant and help maintain substrate cleanliness
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and low-light tolerance
Compatible foreground plant with identical water parameters and fertilizer needs
Common Diseases
Rhizome Rot
Soft, blackened rhizome; mushy texture; foul odor; leaf yellowing and melting
Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup; remove affected portions with sterile tools; increase water changes; ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves (especially older leaves); stunted growth; pale coloration; holes in leaf tissue
Dose liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients and micronutrients; increase water change frequency; test water parameters; ensure adequate lighting
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating leaves; reduced light penetration; plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily; increase water changes; manually remove algae with soft brush; add algae-eating fish like Otocinclus; avoid excess nutrients
Melting
Rapid leaf deterioration and dissolution; transparent or translucent leaves; plant appears to dissolve
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes; ensure stable temperature (22-28°C); reduce stress by minimizing disturbance; trim affected leaves; dose fertilizer to support recovery
