Aponogeton Crispus
Aponogeton crispus
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Aponogetonaceae
📍 Sri Lanka
A bulb plant with long, bright green leaves that have distinctly wavy, crinkled margins. One of the easiest Aponogeton species to keep, tolerating low light without CO2 injection. It goes through natural growth and dormancy cycles — if leaves die back, leave the bulb and it will re-sprout. An excellent low-maintenance background plant.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-aggressive fish that provide movement without uprooting or damaging plants
Excellent algae control and won't damage healthy plant tissue
Compatible foreground/midground companion plant with similar low-light tolerance
Low-maintenance companion plant that thrives in same water conditions without competing for nutrients
Peaceful bottom-dweller that won't uproot plants; prefers similar warm water temperatures
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches
Increase fertilizer dosing with all-in-one liquid fertilizers or add root tabs; ensure adequate macronutrients and trace elements; test water parameters
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced photosynthesis and leaf deterioration
Reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily; increase water changes; add algae-eating fish or shrimp; manually remove algae with soft brush
Bulb Rot
Soft, mushy bulb; foul odor; failure to sprout; leaves yellowing and dying back
Remove affected bulb immediately; improve water circulation and reduce substrate moisture; ensure bulb is not buried too deeply; treat with antifungal if caught early
Melting (Sudden Leaf Loss)
Rapid deterioration and dissolution of leaves; plant appears to dissolve; often occurs after major water changes
Maintain stable water parameters; acclimate plant gradually to new conditions; ensure consistent temperature (20-28°C); provide adequate lighting and nutrients during recovery
