Aponogeton Ulvaceus
Aponogeton ulvaceus
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Aponogetonaceae
📍 Madagascar
Aponogeton ulvaceus produces large, translucent, ruffled leaves that add an elegant flowing quality to the aquarium. It grows from a bulb and may go dormant periodically. During active growth it can fill a large area of the tank with minimal care.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-destructive fish that add color without disturbing the plant or substrate
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't uproot or damage delicate plant tissues
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and complementary growth patterns
Hardy plant that thrives in the same water parameters and adds structural variety
Peaceful mid-water swimmer that respects plants and maintains appropriate tank bioload
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches, slow or halted growth during active phase
Increase fertilizer dosing with all-in-one liquid fertilizers or add root tabs; ensure adequate macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and micronutrients (iron, boron, manganese); test and adjust based on growth response
Bulb Rot
Soft, mushy bulb; foul odor from substrate; failure to produce new shoots; blackened or decaying bulb tissue
Remove affected bulb immediately; improve water circulation and reduce organic waste buildup; ensure substrate is not compacted; maintain stable water parameters and avoid excess detritus around the bulb
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced light penetration, slowed photosynthesis, leaf deterioration
Manually remove algae by gently wiping leaves; introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp (Otocinclus, Red Cherry Shrimp); reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily; maintain nutrient balance to prevent excess algae
Leaf Melting
Rapid deterioration of new leaves, transparent or dissolving leaf tissue, plant collapse despite good conditions
Ensure gradual acclimation to new tank conditions; maintain stable temperature (22-28°C) and pH (6.5-7.5); increase water change frequency; verify adequate CO2 and nutrient availability; reduce stress by minimizing disturbance
