Clown Panchax
Aplocheilus panchax
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cyprinodontiformes›Aplocheilidae
📍 South & Southeast Asia
Surface-dwelling killifish with a metallic blue body and orange-edged fins. Hardy and peaceful top-dweller. Good mosquito larvae hunter.
Care Guide
Diet
Clown Panchax are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small insects. They will occasionally accept high-quality carnivore pellets and flakes, but live food should comprise the bulk of their diet. Feed small amounts once daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes.
Behavior
These are active surface-dwellers that spend most of their time near the water's surface hunting for insects and small prey. They are generally peaceful but may nip at slower-moving fish or fry. Males can be territorial toward each other, so they're best kept singly or in pairs with adequate space and visual barriers.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires specific conditions including dense floating plants, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-6.5), and temperatures around 24-26°C. Eggs are laid on plants and hatch in 12-14 days; fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially. Separating pairs into a dedicated breeding tank increases success rates.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and comparable water requirements make them ideal companions
Fellow killifish with similar dietary needs and peaceful surface-dwelling behavior
Peaceful invertebrate that won't compete for food and helps with algae control
May be preyed upon by hungry Panchax; only suitable in heavily planted tanks with adequate hiding
Similar water parameters and peaceful nature, though both prefer upper water column so monitor for competition
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy, rubbing against surfaces
Raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) or commercial ich medication for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, progressive fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, remove any sharp tank decorations, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid gill movement, loss of appetite, scratching behavior
Darken the tank, raise temperature to 28-30°C, and treat with copper-based medication or salt baths; perform daily water changes
Dropsy
Bloated abdomen, scales standing out like a pinecone, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, improve water quality, and treat with antibiotics; prognosis is often poor, so prevention through good husbandry is critical
