Striped Panchax
Aplocheilus lineatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cyprinodontiformes›Aplocheilidae
📍 India & Sri Lanka
Top-dwelling killifish with green-gold metallic scales and red-edged fins. Surface hunter that jumps — tank must have a lid.
Care Guide
Diet
Striped Panchax are carnivorous surface hunters that require live or frozen foods as their primary diet, including mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small insects. Feed small amounts once daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes. They may accept high-quality carnivore pellets but prefer live prey to stimulate natural hunting behavior.
Behavior
These are active, surface-dwelling killifish that spend most of their time near the water's surface hunting for prey. They are semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly males, which will chase and nip at smaller or slower-moving fish. They are excellent jumpers and require a secure, fitted lid to prevent escapes.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires separate breeding tanks with fine-leaved plants for egg deposition. Females scatter eggs among vegetation over several days, and parents should be removed to prevent egg consumption. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food before graduating to brine shrimp nauplii.
Tank Mates
Similar size and water requirements; fast enough to avoid predation but may compete for surface food
Small tetras can trigger predatory response; only suitable in larger tanks with plenty of space
Bottom-dweller that occupies different water zone; no competition for surface food
Peaceful invertebrate that won't compete; helps maintain tank cleanliness
Similar species and temperament; males may fight; only in larger tanks with visual barriers
Provides cover and surface area for eggs if breeding; won't be eaten
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against surfaces
Raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per gallon) or commercial ich treatment for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent changes, remove sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; ensure temperature stays 24-26°C
Velvet (Oodinium)
Gold or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, scratching behavior, lethargy
Darken tank, raise temperature to 28°C, perform daily water changes, use copper-free velvet treatment; isolate if possible
Mouth Fungus (Columnaris)
White or gray growth around mouth and gills, difficulty eating, frayed fins
Improve water quality immediately, use antibacterial medication, maintain temperature at 24-25°C, increase aeration
