Care Guide
Diet
Court Jester Gobies are primarily herbivorous grazers that feed on algae, diatoms, and small copepods in the reef environment. Supplement their natural grazing with high-quality herbivore flakes, spirulina-based foods, and occasional frozen micro foods like copepods or rotifers 2-3 times weekly. They will spend much of their time picking at live rock and substrate, so maintaining a healthy population of natural microfauna is essential for long-term health.
Behavior
These gobies are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that spend most of their time grazing and sifting through substrate and rock crevices. They are relatively sedentary compared to other gobies and rarely display aggression toward tankmates, though they may be territorial with other bottom-dwellers in small tanks. They are most active during dawn and dusk, and their vibrant coloration and constant foraging activity make them engaging to observe.
Breeding
Breeding Court Jester Gobies in captivity is extremely rare and difficult, with very few documented successful spawns in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and stable conditions that are challenging to replicate. Hobbyists should not expect to breed this species and should focus on providing optimal care for captive-collected specimens.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and reef-safe; occupy different tank zones
Both small, peaceful gobies; may compete for grazing space in very small tanks
Reef-safe invertebrate; different feeding ecology minimizes competition
Peaceful invertebrate; may burrow but won't harm the goby
Both algae grazers; may compete for food in smaller tanks but generally compatible
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against rocks
Raise temperature gradually to 26-27°C, maintain excellent water quality, use copper-based treatments or hyposalinity if necessary; quarantine infected fish
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid gill movement, loss of appetite, lethargy
Increase aeration, maintain pristine water conditions, use copper treatments or UV sterilization; quarantine immediately
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, behavioral changes
Perform frequent water changes, improve water quality, use antibiotic treatments if severe; ensure adequate nutrition and low stress
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins
Quarantine affected fish, use appropriate antiparasitic treatments, maintain optimal water parameters and temperature
