Ask Finn

Stunning cold-water stem plant with whorls of feathery leaves. One of the most beautiful temperate aquarium plants. Challenging to keep in tropical tanks — prefers cool, clear, well-oxygenated water.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or necrotic spots

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing (macros and micros); ensure substrate is nutrient-rich; test water parameters and adjust CO₂ if needed

Algae Overgrowth (Green Spot, Black Beard)

Symptoms

Green or black algae coating leaves and stems, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline

Treatment

Reduce light duration to 8–10 hours daily; increase water changes; add algae-eating shrimp or fish; improve water circulation

Melting (Decay)

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; stems rot; rapid plant deterioration

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent changes; ensure adequate CO₂ and lighting; remove decaying tissue; check for poor water circulation or temperature stress

Bacterial Infection

Symptoms

Soft, mushy stems; foul odor; rapid decay of new growth; leaf discoloration

Treatment

Remove affected plant parts immediately; increase water changes; ensure excellent water circulation and oxygenation; maintain cool, stable temperatures
