Neon Dwarf Gourami
Trichogaster lalius
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Dwarf Gourami · neon
📍 India
The Neon Dwarf Gourami shows intensely bright blue and red striping with a particularly vivid, iridescent quality. It is peaceful with other species and thrives in well-planted community tanks.
Care Guide
Diet
Neon Dwarf Gouramis are omnivorous and should be fed high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia once daily in small portions. Supplement with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based foods occasionally to ensure balanced nutrition.
Behavior
These peaceful, labyrinth fish are relatively shy and prefer densely planted environments where they can explore and rest among vegetation. Males may display territorial behavior toward other gouramis, but they are generally compatible with peaceful community fish and spend time at all water levels, though they prefer mid-level areas.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires specific conditions including warm water (26-28°C), dense floating plants for nest building, and a separate breeding tank. Males build bubble nests and guard eggs; fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro foods.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful schooling fish with identical water parameter requirements
Peaceful algae eaters that occupy bottom zone and don't compete for resources
Peaceful schooling fish that thrive in similar warm, planted community settings
Peaceful invertebrates; gouramis may occasionally hunt shrimplets but adults are generally safe
Both are gouramis; keep only one male per tank to avoid territorial aggression
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature to 28-30°C gradually, perform daily 25% water changes, use ich medication (malachite green or formalin-based treatments) following product instructions
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, reduce stocking density, use antibacterial medication if severe, ensure adequate filtration
Velvet Disease (Oodinium)
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, scratching behavior, loss of appetite
Increase aeration, raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily water changes, use copper-free velvet treatments or salt baths (1 teaspoon per gallon) for 10-14 days
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, swollen belly, torn fins, behavioral changes
Improve water quality immediately, perform 50% water change, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, isolate severely affected fish in a hospital tank
