Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami
Trichogaster lalius
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Dwarf Gourami · powder blue
📍 India
The Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami displays a soft, uniform powder blue coloration with minimal red striping. A visually striking fish that is peaceful toward other species but males should not be kept together.
Care Guide
Diet
Powder Blue Dwarf Gouramis are omnivorous and should be fed high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia once daily in small portions. Supplement with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae wafers 2-3 times weekly to support digestive health and coloration.
Behavior
This species is peaceful and relatively shy, preferring planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots. Males are territorial toward other gouramis and should be kept singly, while females may coexist in larger, well-planted setups. They are labyrinth breathers and often build bubble nests at the water surface.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is moderately difficult and requires specific conditions including warm water (26-28°C), dense vegetation, and isolation of the breeding pair. Males construct elaborate bubble nests and guard eggs and fry aggressively; fry require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro foods.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and compatible water parameters make them ideal community tank mates
Small, non-aggressive algae eaters that occupy different tank zones and won't compete for food or space
Peaceful invertebrates that help with algae control; ensure adequate hiding spots to prevent predation of young shrimp
Small, schooling fish with peaceful behavior and matching water temperature requirements
Hardy plant that provides shelter and won't be uprooted by this gentle species
Common Diseases
Fin Rot
Frayed, discolored, or deteriorating fins; lethargy and loss of appetite
Perform 25% water changes every 2-3 days, improve water quality, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe; ensure proper tank maintenance and avoid aggressive tank mates
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, excessive scratching against surfaces, rapid gill movement
Gradually raise water temperature to 28-30°C over 48 hours, treat with ich medication following label instructions, and perform daily water changes; maintain temperature elevation for 7-10 days
Gourami Disease (Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus)
Lethargy, loss of color, bloating, difficulty swimming, and sudden death
No cure exists; isolate infected fish immediately to prevent spread, maintain pristine water conditions, and consider euthanasia if suffering is severe; focus on prevention through quarantine and stress reduction
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, ulcers, cloudy eyes, and cotton-like growths on body
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, treat with broad-spectrum antibacterial medication, and improve water quality; ensure proper nutrition and reduce stressors
