Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cypriniformes›Cyprinidae
Variety of Common Goldfish · Pompom
📍 China (captive-developed)
Distinctive fancy goldfish with enlarged nasal tissue forming fluffy pom-pom bundles at the nostrils. Often paired with a butterfly or double tail. Requires care to keep the nasal bundles intact.
Care Guide
Diet
Pompom goldfish are omnivores that require a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Include vegetable matter such as blanched peas or algae wafers 2-3 times weekly to support digestive health.
Behavior
Pompom goldfish are peaceful, slow-moving swimmers that spend most of their time in mid-water zones foraging and exploring. They are social fish that do well in groups but may nip at plants and uproot substrate while searching for food. Their delicate nasal tissue requires careful tank design to avoid damage from sharp decorations or aggressive tank mates.
Breeding
Breeding pompom goldfish in captivity is difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require specific seasonal temperature triggers and large spawning spaces; eggs are typically scattered and often eaten by parents. Most pompom goldfish available in the hobby are captive-bred by specialized breeders rather than home aquarists.

Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, flashing against objects, labored breathing, loss of appetite
Raise water temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) or ich medication; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform 50% water change immediately, improve water quality with frequent changes, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; remove sharp decorations that may damage delicate fins
Swim Bladder Disorder
Difficulty maintaining buoyancy, floating at surface or sinking, tilted swimming posture
Reduce feeding temporarily, feed high-fiber foods like blanched peas, maintain stable water temperature; may resolve with improved water quality and reduced stress
Nasal Tissue Damage/Infection
Swollen or deteriorating pompom tissue, white patches, reduced appetite
Remove sharp tank decorations immediately, perform frequent water changes, treat with antibacterial medication if infected; prevent by maintaining pristine water conditions and avoiding aggressive tank mates
