Yellow Watchman Goby
Cryptocentrus cinctus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Gobiidae
📍 Indo-Pacific sandy reef flats
Vibrant yellow with blue spots, best known for its mutualistic relationship with pistol shrimp — the shrimp digs and maintains a shared burrow while the goby stands guard. A staple of any reef tank.
Care Guide
Diet
Yellow Watchman Gobies are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of small frozen foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and copepods. High-quality marine pellets formulated for small carnivores should be offered daily. Feed small portions once daily, adjusting quantity based on appetite and tank bioload.
Behavior
This goby is a bottom-dweller that spends much of its time hovering near its burrow, darting in and out to feed and survey its territory. They are peaceful and non-aggressive toward other fish, though they may be territorial with other gobies. The species is famous for its mutualistic symbiosis with pistol shrimp, which excavate and maintain a shared burrow while the goby stands guard.
Breeding
Breeding Yellow Watchman Gobies in captivity is extremely rare and difficult, with very few documented successes in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and pair bonding that are challenging to replicate. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught, and captive breeding is not a practical goal for hobbyists.
Tank Mates
Forms natural symbiotic partnership; shrimp digs burrow while goby provides protection
Peaceful reef fish with similar water requirements; non-competitive for bottom space
Similar size and peaceful temperament; may occupy different burrow areas
Peaceful invertebrate that won't compete for burrow space; similar water parameters
Peaceful scavenger that occupies different ecological niche in the tank
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against rocks, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, maintain excellent water quality, use copper-based treatments or hyposalinity therapy; quarantine if possible
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, cloudy eyes, open sores, discoloration, loss of appetite
Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent water changes, use antibiotic medications if severe; ensure adequate nutrition
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, labored breathing
Quarantine affected fish, treat with appropriate antiparasitic medication, maintain pristine water conditions
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, progressive fin loss
Perform large water changes, improve water quality, treat with antibacterial medication if bacterial; ensure adequate nutrition
