Giant Vallisneria
Vallisneria americana var. gigantea
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Alismatales›Hydrocharitaceae
📍 South America
Very large Vallisneria with broad, ribbon-like leaves that can reach the surface in deep tanks. Propagates by runners. Virtually indestructible.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful schooling fish that thrive in planted tanks without uprooting or damaging plants
Excellent algae control without harming plant tissue; beneficial for planted tank maintenance
Excellent companion plant with different growth pattern; both thrive in low-medium light
Complementary background plant with similar care requirements and low-light tolerance
Peaceful mid-water swimmers that appreciate dense plant cover without uprooting stems
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, particularly in older leaves
Increase fertilizer dosing (macronutrients and micronutrients), ensure adequate substrate nutrients, consider liquid all-in-one fertilizers applied weekly
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced light penetration, plant appears dulled
Increase water changes, reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected leaves if severe
Root Rot
Mushy, blackened roots, foul odor from substrate, plant fails to anchor or shows decay at base
Improve substrate drainage, increase water circulation, reduce organic debris accumulation, perform partial water changes, replace affected substrate sections
Melting
Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; occurs after major environmental changes
Maintain stable water parameters, avoid drastic temperature swings, ensure consistent lighting, allow acclimation period after transport, trim damaged leaves
