Anubias Snow White
Anubias barteri var. nana
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
Variety of Anubias Nana · snow white
📍 Captive-bred cultivar
A rare variegated cultivar producing ghostly white to cream-coloured new leaves that slowly green up with age. The contrast between the white young growth and mature green leaves is striking. It is slower and slightly more demanding than green Anubias — it needs healthy roots and water but still tolerates low light. Avoid strong fertiliser, which can cause leaves to revert to solid green. A centrepiece plant for collectors and dedicated scapers.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that will not uproot or damage attached plants
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and pose no threat to plant tissue
Small, peaceful fish that occupy mid-water and won't disturb plant anchoring
Companion plant with similar care requirements and aesthetic appeal
Complementary low-light plant that creates layered aquascaping with Anubias Snow White
Larger shrimp that graze algae without damaging plant leaves or rhizomes
Common Diseases
Rhizome Rot
Soft, blackened rhizome tissue; foul odor; leaf yellowing and detachment
Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup. Remove affected sections with sterile tools. Ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate. Increase water changes and consider adding beneficial bacteria (e.g., Flourish Thrive).
Leaf Melt
Sudden dissolution of leaves; transparent or mushy leaf tissue; rapid leaf loss
Usually caused by drastic parameter changes or poor water quality. Perform 25–30% water change, check pH and temperature stability, and ensure adequate light. Remove dead leaves to prevent decay.
Algae Overgrowth (Black Beard Algae)
Dark, hair-like algae coating leaves and rhizome; reduced light penetration
Increase water circulation and reduce photoperiod to 6–8 hours daily. Manual removal with soft brush. Reduce excess nutrients and perform frequent water changes. Siamese Algae Eaters or shrimp can help control growth.
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Micronutrients)
Yellowing new leaves despite white variegation; stunted growth; pale appearance
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer (Thrive, Flourish) at recommended rates 1–2 times weekly. Ensure adequate light for photosynthesis. Test water parameters and adjust dosing based on plant response.
