Blue Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Platy · blue
📍 Central America
A selectively bred platy variety featuring a cool blue to steel-grey body coloration, sometimes with darker fins. Hardy and peaceful, it is an excellent beginner fish that thrives in community tanks with hard, slightly alkaline water and is a prolific livebearer.
Care Guide
Diet
Blue Platys are omnivorous and thrive on high-quality flake foods and small pellets as their staple diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to promote color and breeding condition. Include vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based foods to support digestive health.
Behavior
Blue Platys are peaceful, active mid-water swimmers that spend much of their day foraging and exploring. They are social fish that do best in groups of 3 or more, displaying minimal aggression even toward smaller tank mates. Males may chase females during breeding season, but this rarely results in injury.
Breeding
Blue Platys are prolific livebearers that breed readily in captivity with minimal intervention. Females produce 20-40 fry every 4-6 weeks once mature; provide dense plants like Java Moss or Water Sprite for fry to hide and survive. Separate fry to a nursery tank or heavily planted area to prevent predation by adults.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and identical water parameter requirements make them ideal companions
Small, peaceful schooling fish that occupy different water zones; prefers slightly softer water but tolerates platy conditions
Peaceful algae eater that won't compete for food and helps maintain tank cleanliness
Peaceful and similarly sized; may occasionally chase platys but rarely causes harm in adequately sized tanks
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, fish rubbing against objects
Raise temperature to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with ich medication or salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent changes, remove sharp decorations, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Dropsy
Swollen belly, scales standing out like a pinecone, lethargy and loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform daily water changes, and treat with antibiotics; prognosis is often poor
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid gill movement, scratching behavior
Increase aeration, raise temperature to 28°C, reduce lighting, and treat with copper-based medication or salt baths
