Care Guide

Diet

Mickey Mouse Platies are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and occasional frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement with blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach weekly to support digestive health and coloration.

Behavior

These peaceful, active fish spend most of their time in the mid-water column, constantly foraging and exploring. They are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least 3, preferably with a female-to-male ratio of 2:1 to reduce harassment. Males may display mild aggression toward each other, but this rarely results in injury.

Breeding

Mickey Mouse Platies breed readily in captivity and are livebearers, making them excellent for beginners interested in breeding. Females produce 20-40 fry every 4-6 weeks when kept with males; provide dense plants like Java Moss or Water Sprite to protect fry from predation. Separate fry into a nursery tank or heavily planted area for best survival rates.
