Mickey Mouse Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Platy · mickey mouse
📍 Central America
A platy variety named for the three black spots at the base of its tail that form the silhouette of Mickey Mouse's head and ears when viewed from the side. One of the most popular and recognizable platy varieties, it is hardy, peaceful, and an excellent beginner fish for community tanks with hard, neutral to alkaline water.
Care Guide
Diet
Mickey Mouse Platies are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and occasional frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement with blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach weekly to support digestive health and coloration.
Behavior
These peaceful, active fish spend most of their time in the mid-water column, constantly foraging and exploring. They are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least 3, preferably with a female-to-male ratio of 2:1 to reduce harassment. Males may display mild aggression toward each other, but this rarely results in injury.
Breeding
Mickey Mouse Platies breed readily in captivity and are livebearers, making them excellent for beginners interested in breeding. Females produce 20-40 fry every 4-6 weeks when kept with males; provide dense plants like Java Moss or Water Sprite to protect fry from predation. Separate fry into a nursery tank or heavily planted area for best survival rates.
Tank Mates
Similar size, water parameters, and peaceful temperament; both are livebearers with compatible breeding behaviors
Small, peaceful schooling fish that occupy different water zones and prefer similar neutral to slightly alkaline water
Peaceful algae eater that occupies bottom zone and prefers similar water hardness and pH
Peaceful invertebrate that helps control algae and detritus; thrives in hard, alkaline water like platies prefer
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise water temperature to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with ich medication or salt baths (1 teaspoon per gallon) for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove sharp decorations, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Dropsy
Bloated abdomen, scales standing out like a pinecone, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform daily water changes, and treat with antibiotics; prognosis is poor if advanced
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, scratching behavior, clamped fins
Raise temperature to 28-29°C, reduce light exposure, and treat with copper-based medication or salt baths for 7-10 days
