Tuxedo Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Platy · tuxedo
📍 Mexico
The Tuxedo Platy is a selectively bred color or fin form of the platy, sharing the same hardy, peaceful temperament and wide water parameter tolerance. Platys are livebearers that thrive in community tanks and make excellent beginner fish.
Care Guide
Diet
Tuxedo Platys are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods and small pellets as staples, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Include vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based foods weekly to support digestive health. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
Tuxedo Platys are peaceful, active schooling fish that spend most of their time in the mid-water column, occasionally browsing near the substrate. They are social and do best in groups of 3 or more, displaying minimal aggression toward other peaceful species. Males may chase females during breeding season, but this rarely causes serious harm in established community tanks.
Breeding
Breeding Tuxedo Platys in captivity is very easy and occurs readily in established tanks without special conditioning. Females are livebearers that produce 20-40 fry every 4-6 weeks when kept with males; remove fry to a separate rearing tank or heavily planted area to prevent predation. Fry grow quickly and reach maturity in 3-4 months, making population control important in home aquariums.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and identical water parameter tolerance make them ideal community companions
Small, non-aggressive schooling fish that occupy different water zones and have compatible care requirements
Peaceful mid-water dweller with similar temperature preferences; monitor for rare aggression during breeding
Algae-eating snail that coexists peacefully and helps maintain tank cleanliness
Live plant that provides shelter for fry and improves water quality without being uprooted by platys
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise water temperature to 28-30°C over 48 hours, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) or commercial ich medication for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin margins, progressive fin loss
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, remove any sharp tank décor, and treat with antibacterial medication or salt baths if infection is severe
Dropsy
Swollen abdomen, scales standing out like a pinecone, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, feed high-quality foods, and treat with antibiotics if bacterial; prognosis is often poor
Velvet Disease (Oodinium)
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, clamped fins, scratching behavior
Increase aeration, raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform daily water changes, and treat with copper-based medication or salt for 7-10 days; remove carbon from filter during treatment
