Chalice Coral
Echinophyllia sp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Lobophylliidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reefs
Encrusting LPS coral with eye patterns in vivid colour combinations. Moderately aggressive. Grows flat plates over rock. One of the most collectible coral genres.
Tank Mates
Reef-safe fish that won't nip at corals; compatible with established chalice systems
Beneficial for coral health; reef-safe and won't damage polyps
Reef-safe invertebrate that maintains low bioload; won't harm corals
Small, peaceful reef fish that won't disturb corals or compete for space
Both are LPS corals; provide 6+ inches spacing to prevent allelopathic warfare
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps appear white or translucent, reduced feeding response
Reduce light intensity, lower water temperature 1-2°C, improve water circulation, check for ammonia/nitrite spikes, perform 25% water change
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown mucus-like film spreading across coral surface, rapid tissue recession, foul odor
Isolate coral if possible, perform daily 50% water changes, remove affected tissue with turkey baster, treat with iodine-based coral dip, improve water quality
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae covering polyps, reduced polyp extension, visible film on coral surface
Reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water flow, manually remove algae, reduce nutrient levels through water changes, consider adding herbivorous snails
Polyp Necrosis
Polyps fail to extend, tissue recession, white skeleton exposure, loss of coloration
Check and stabilize pH (8.1-8.3), alkalinity (8-12 dKH), and calcium (400-450 ppm), improve water circulation, reduce stocking density, perform 25% water change
