Open Brain Coral
Trachyphyllia geoffroyi
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Lobophylliidae
📍 Indo-Pacific reef flats
Free-living LPS with dramatic maze-like ridges and vivid colours — green, red, blue, and multicolour morphs. Placed directly on sand; inflates impressively at night to feed. One of the most beautiful reef centrepieces.
Tank Mates
Small, reef-safe fish that won't disturb the coral or compete for food
Beneficial invertebrate that maintains water quality and poses no threat to the coral
Peaceful scavenger that helps control detritus without bothering the coral
Algae grazer that maintains tank cleanliness without damaging corals
Similar LPS species with compatible care requirements; maintain spacing to prevent tentacle contact
Small, reef-safe fish that won't predate on the coral or compete aggressively
Common Diseases
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown mucus-like tissue sloughing off the coral surface; rapid tissue recession; visible brown film
Isolate coral if possible; perform large water changes; remove affected tissue with pipette; treat with antibiotics or iodine dips; improve water quality and flow
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color; pale or white appearance; reduced feeding response; tissue thinning
Check water parameters (temperature, salinity, pH); reduce light intensity temporarily; improve water circulation; ensure stable conditions; may recover if stressor is removed quickly
Parasitic Infection
White spots or film on coral; excessive mucus production; failure to inflate properly; visible parasites under magnification
Quarantine if possible; perform freshwater dips (brief, 30-60 seconds); treat with copper-free parasite medications; improve water quality and oxygenation
Tissue Necrosis
Localized dead tissue patches; darkening or blackening of coral areas; progressive tissue loss
Remove dead tissue with sterile tools; improve water flow around coral; maintain pristine water quality; check for allelopathic competition from nearby corals
