Lobo Coral
Lobophyllia hemprichii
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Lobophylliidae
📍 Indo-Pacific reefs
Large, fleshy-polyped LPS with smooth round corallites and vivid colouration. Extremely hardy and popular in mixed reef tanks. Inflates dramatically after lights-out to capture food. Accepts a wide range of conditions.
Tank Mates
Peaceful reef fish that will not harm the coral and add activity to the tank
Beneficial invertebrate that maintains water quality without threatening the coral
Algae-eating snail that helps maintain tank cleanliness without damaging corals
Small, peaceful fish that stays in lower water column and won't disturb the coral
Peaceful invertebrate that creates minimal disturbance to the coral polyps
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps appear white or pale, reduced feeding response
Reduce light intensity, check water parameters (especially temperature and salinity), improve water flow, and ensure stable conditions. Perform partial water changes and monitor closely.
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown, slimy tissue sloughing off the coral, rapid tissue loss, foul odor
Immediately isolate the coral if possible. Remove affected tissue with a turkey baster or siphon. Perform large water changes, improve water quality, and reduce feeding temporarily. Treat with antibiotics if available.
Polyp Recession
Polyps fail to extend, tissue pulling back from skeleton, reduced feeding
Check water parameters (pH, salinity, nitrate levels). Improve water flow and lighting. Reduce feeding pressure from fish. Ensure stable temperature and perform regular water changes.
Parasitic Infection
Visible parasites on tissue, excessive mucus production, polyps constantly retracted
Quarantine the coral if possible. Perform dips in freshwater or specialized coral dips. Improve water quality and increase water changes. Monitor for secondary infections.
