Feather Duster Eriocaulon

Eriocaulon sp. 'Feather Duster'

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaEriocaulaceae

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Rare and highly sought-after Eriocaulon with long, feathery white-green leaves that fan out like a plume. A collector's plant demanding very soft, slightly acidic water and strong light. Breathtaking when healthy.

Common Diseases

Melting

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; rapid deterioration of the rosette structure

Treatment

Improve water stability (soft, slightly acidic pH 5.5-6.5), increase CO2 injection, enhance lighting, and perform 25-30% water changes. Remove dead tissue to prevent rot. May recover if conditions stabilize quickly.

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Stunted growth, pale or yellowing leaves, loss of feathery appearance, weak coloration

Treatment

Increase liquid fertilizer dosing (macro and micro nutrients), verify CO2 levels are adequate (30-40 ppm), and ensure substrate nutrients are present. Test water parameters and adjust based on results.

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaves; reduced light penetration to the plant

Treatment

Reduce photoperiod to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp (Red Cherry or Amano), and manually remove algae. Ensure CO2 and nutrient balance favors plant growth over algae.

Bacterial Rot

Symptoms

Foul odor, blackened or mushy leaf bases, rapid tissue breakdown despite stable conditions

Treatment

Perform large water changes (50%), remove affected leaves immediately, improve water circulation, and reduce organic waste. Consider adding beneficial bacteria or treating with antibacterial medication if severe.
