Odora Hygrophila
Hygrophila odora
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
📍 India, Sri Lanka
A lesser-known species with elegant, slightly wavy narrow leaves. Grows quickly in good conditions and provides dense cover for fish and invertebrates. The emersed form produces small fragrant flowers, giving the species its name.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage plant leaves and benefit from plant cover
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without harming plants and thrive in planted tanks
Small, peaceful fish that appreciate dense plant cover for security and won't uproot stems
Calm community fish that benefit from plant shelter; may occasionally nibble soft plants but generally compatible
Companion stem plant with similar care requirements and growth rate; creates lush planted aesthetic
Larger shrimp species that maintain algae control without damaging plant tissue
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches
Increase fertilizer dosing frequency to weekly; ensure macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients (iron, boron) are present in fertilizer formulation
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced light penetration, plant vigor decline
Reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily; increase water changes; add algae-eating fish or shrimp; manually remove affected leaves if severe
Root Rot (Substrate-Related)
Mushy stems at substrate level, foul odor from substrate, leaf yellowing and wilting despite adequate light
Improve substrate drainage; increase water circulation with aeration; perform partial water changes; remove severely affected stems and replant healthy cuttings
Melting
Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or slimy stems, plant collapse within days of introduction
Gradually acclimate plant to tank conditions over 1-2 weeks; ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5); maintain consistent temperature; increase water circulation and reduce bioload
