Hygrophila Polysperma
Hygrophila polysperma
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
📍 India & Southeast Asia
Hygrophila polysperma is arguably the most beginner-friendly stem plant available — it grows rapidly in almost any conditions with minimal fertilisation or CO2. It can be used as a temporary background plant while slower species establish. Note that it is considered invasive in some US states and should not be released into natural waterways.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage plant leaves and benefit from plant-rich environments
Small, peaceful schooling fish that thrive in planted tanks and add visual contrast
Gentle invertebrates that graze on algae and detritus without harming healthy plant tissue
Peaceful mid-water swimmers that appreciate dense plant cover for resting and spawning
Bottom-dwelling catfish that aerate substrate without uprooting established stem plants
Excellent companion plant that creates layered habitat and shares similar low-nutrient tolerance
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or transparent patches
Dose all-in-one fertilizer (e.g., Thrive, Flourish) 1-2 times weekly; increase frequency if symptoms persist. Test water parameters and ensure adequate lighting to maximize nutrient uptake.
Algae Overgrowth (Black Beard Algae, Hair Algae)
Dark fuzzy or thread-like growth on leaves and stems, plant appears smothered
Increase water change frequency to 30-50% weekly, reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eater) or shrimp. Manual removal and spot-treating with hydrogen peroxide (2-3 ml per 10 gallons) can help.
Melting (Sudden Leaf Deterioration)
Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve within days of planting
This is common when transitioning emersed plants to fully submerged conditions. Trim affected leaves, maintain stable water parameters (pH 5.5–8.0), and ensure consistent temperature. New growth will emerge healthy within 2-3 weeks.
Slow Growth or Stagnation
Minimal new leaf development, plant appears dormant despite adequate conditions
Increase lighting to 8-10 hours daily, boost fertilizer dosing, ensure water temperature is 24–28°C, and perform 25% water changes weekly. Check for buried stems and replant if necessary to encourage fresh root development.
