Hygrophila lancea
Hygrophila lancea
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
📍 South America (Brazil, Bolivia)
The base species of the popular lancea group. A delicate, fine-stemmed plant with small, narrow lance-shaped leaves that grow in tight whorls around the stem. Under high light the leaves develop attractive reddish-pink tones. More compact and slower growing than most Hygrophilas, making it well-suited for the midground of Nature Aquarium and Iwagumi layouts.
Tank Mates
Gentle algae grazers that won't damage delicate foliage and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful shrimp that won't uproot or damage fine-stemmed plants
Small, non-aggressive fish that provide movement without disturbing planted layout
Tiny, peaceful community fish ideal for planted tanks with delicate vegetation
Excellent companion plant; slower growth rate and different form create visual contrast
Compatible foreground/midground plant that complements Hygrophila lancea's vertical structure
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, loss of red pigmentation under high light
Increase fertilizer dosing (macro and micronutrients), ensure CO2 supplementation, verify adequate lighting; perform water tests to check nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating stems and leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce photoperiod to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes (30-50% weekly), add algae-eating shrimp or fish, improve water circulation, reduce excess nutrients
Melting
Leaves become translucent, mushy stems, rapid tissue breakdown after planting
Ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 22-28°C), avoid drastic changes during acclimation, maintain good water circulation, trim affected portions and allow plant to recover
Slow Growth
Minimal new leaf development, stunted stem elongation, pale appearance despite adequate light
Verify CO2 levels (20-30 ppm recommended), increase fertilizer dosing, ensure medium-high lighting (8-10 hours daily), check water temperature is within optimal range
