Water Wisteria
Hygrophila difformis
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
📍 Indian Subcontinent
Water wisteria is a fast-growing stem plant with deeply lobed, feathery leaves that vary in form depending on light intensity. It is an excellent nutrient sponge that helps control algae in new setups. Cuttings root readily and it adapts to a wide range of water parameters.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't uproot or damage plant stems
Small, non-destructive fish that benefit from dense plant cover for security
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't harm plant tissue
Complementary foreground plant with similar water parameter requirements
Slow-growing companion plant that pairs well in mid-to-background layouts
Larger shrimp that may occasionally nibble delicate new growth but generally compatible
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, leaf holes or necrosis, particularly in older leaves
Dose all-in-one fertilizer weekly; add root tabs if substrate lacks nutrients; ensure adequate lighting to support nutrient uptake
Algae Overgrowth (Green Spot, Black Beard)
Visible algae coating on leaves and stems, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Increase water changes, reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours, boost CO2 if possible, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eater), manually remove affected leaves
Root Rot (Substrate-Related)
Mushy, blackened stems near substrate, foul odor, plant collapse despite adequate lighting
Improve substrate drainage; increase water circulation; remove affected stems and replant healthy cuttings; ensure substrate is not compacted or anaerobic
Melting (Emersion Shock)
Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or translucent leaves, stem softening after introduction to aquarium
Trim affected leaves; maintain stable water parameters; ensure adequate light and nutrients; allow 2-4 weeks for acclimation and new growth
