Hygrophila 'Sunset'

Hygrophila sp. 'Sunset'

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaAcanthaceae

📍 Cultivar

Ask Finn

A variegated cultivar with creamy white, pink, and green patterning on the leaves — the colours intensify under stronger light. A favourite in Dutch and community planted tanks for adding colour without the difficulty of true red plants. Stays compact and bushy with regular trimming.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, loss of variegation intensity

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing (macro and micronutrients), ensure adequate lighting, and consider adding CO2 supplementation

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8–10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, and manually remove affected leaves

Melting

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, and disintegrate; stems weaken

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial changes, ensure stable temperature (22–28°C), increase CO2 if available, and remove severely affected portions

Root Rot

Symptoms

Blackened or mushy roots, foul odor from substrate, plant fails to anchor

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste buildup, increase water circulation, and consider replanting in fresh substrate if severe
