Kenya Tree Coral
Capnella sp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Nephtheidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reefs, Kenya to Philippines
Soft coral that grows into a branching tree shape. Prolific grower and propagator — commonly frags itself. Peaceful but its natural chemicals can inhibit nearby coral growth.
Tank Mates
Hardy reef fish that won't nip at coral polyps and thrive in similar saltwater conditions
Beneficial invertebrate that maintains water quality and won't harm soft corals
Small, peaceful fish that feeds on parasites and maintains reef health without disturbing corals
Active bottom-dweller that won't interact with corals and adds movement to the tank
Algae-eating snail that helps maintain water quality without damaging soft coral tissue
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps retract and remain closed, tissue appears white or translucent
Reduce lighting intensity, check water parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients), improve water flow, and ensure stable conditions. May recover if stressor is removed quickly.
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown, slimy coating on coral tissue, rapid tissue recession, polyps fail to extend
Isolate affected coral if possible, perform 25% water change, increase water flow, and remove affected tissue with clean tools. Treat with antibiotics if infection spreads.
Polyp Necrosis
Polyps fail to open, tissue darkens or becomes translucent, slow tissue death from base upward
Check water quality parameters immediately, improve water circulation, reduce bioload, and ensure adequate feeding. May indicate poor water conditions or allelopathic stress from nearby corals.
Pest Infestation (Nudibranchs/Flatworms)
Small white or colored organisms visible on coral, rapid tissue damage, polyps consumed
Remove visible pests manually with tweezers, dip coral in freshwater or specialized coral dip, quarantine affected coral, and monitor tank for reinfestation.
