Melanurus Wrasse
Halichoeres melanurus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Labridae
📍 Indo-Pacific — Philippines to Samoa
Dazzling rainbow colouration — females green-blue, males sporting a vivid magenta-and-green pattern. A sand-diver that buries to sleep. Natural predator of flatworms and pyramid snails.
Care Guide
Diet
Melanurus wrasses are carnivorous and require a varied diet of high-quality meaty foods. Feed mysis shrimp, small crustaceans, copepods, and quality carnivore pellets once daily. They naturally prey on small invertebrates and will help control flatworms and pyramid snails in the aquarium.
Behavior
Active mid-water swimmers that are semi-aggressive, particularly toward smaller fish and invertebrates. They are curious and energetic during the day, but exhibit a unique sand-diving behavior at night, burying themselves in the substrate to sleep. Best kept singly or in pairs, as males can be territorial toward other wrasses.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is extremely rare and difficult. These wrasses are sequential hermaphrodites with complex spawning behaviors that are poorly understood in home aquariums. Successful breeding requires large, well-established systems with specific environmental triggers and is not recommended for most hobbyists.
Tank Mates
Similar water requirements and mid-water swimming habits; generally peaceful coexistence
May be predated upon; only suitable in larger tanks with adequate hiding
Different feeding niches and behavior patterns minimize conflict
Bottom-dwelling behavior reduces competition; similar saltwater requirements
Fast-moving species that avoids confrontation; occupies different tank zones
Common Diseases
Ich (Marine Ich)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against rocks, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, maintain excellent water quality, consider copper-based treatments or hyposalinity in quarantine
Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE)
Pitting or erosion of head and lateral line, loss of pigmentation in affected areas
Improve diet with vitamin-enriched foods, enhance water quality, reduce stress, ensure adequate nutrition with varied meaty foods
Parasitic Infections
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, clamped fins, loss of appetite
Quarantine affected fish, treat with appropriate antiparasitic medication, maintain pristine water conditions
Bacterial Infections
Torn fins, open sores, cloudy eyes, behavioral changes, loss of appetite
Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent partial water changes, consider antibiotic treatment if severe
