Fire Coral
Millepora alcicornis
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Milleporidae
📍 Caribbean and tropical Atlantic reefs
A hydrozoan rather than a true coral — branching, blade-like, or encrusting forms in mustard-yellow. Delivers a potent sting, even to humans. Fast-growing and found on shallow, high-flow reef crests.
Tank Mates
Hardy reef fish that can coexist with fire corals; some clownfish species naturally associate with corals
May be stung by fire coral nematocysts; use only in larger systems with adequate space
Generally reef-safe but may be affected by fire coral stings; monitor closely
Algae-eating snail that won't interact with fire coral and helps maintain tank cleanliness
Peaceful grazer that avoids fire coral; useful for algae control in reef systems
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, pale or white appearance, reduced feeding response
Reduce light intensity, lower water temperature slightly, improve water quality and flow; ensure stable conditions
Tissue Necrosis
Darkening or browning of tissue, visible decay, slime coating
Improve water quality, increase water flow, perform partial water changes; isolate if possible to prevent spread
Pest Infestation (Nudibranchs/Flatworms)
Visible small organisms on coral, tissue damage, rapid decline
Manual removal, dip treatments with appropriate coral-safe solutions, or temporary relocation to quarantine
Bacterial Infection
Slime production, tissue recession, foul odor, loss of polyp extension
Improve water quality, increase flow, perform water changes; antibiotics only as last resort in isolated systems
