Porites Coral
Porites lobata
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Poritidae
📍 Widespread Indo-Pacific and Caribbean
Massively important reef-builder — slow-growing mounds and columns covered in tiny polyps. Host to Christmas Tree Worms and boring clams. Hardy for SPS; tolerates a wider range of conditions than Acropora.
Tank Mates
Small, reef-safe fish that won't damage coral polyps; may form symbiotic relationships
Beneficial symbiotic relationship; removes parasites and dead tissue without harming coral
Reef-safe scavenger that helps maintain water quality and won't nip at coral polyps
Small, peaceful fish that may provide cleaning services and won't disturb the coral
Algae grazer that maintains tank cleanliness without harming coral structure
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps become pale or white, reduced feeding response
Reduce light intensity and water temperature; improve water quality; ensure adequate flow; may recover if stressor is removed quickly
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown, gelatinous film covering coral surface; rapid tissue recession; foul odor
Isolate affected coral; perform 50% water change; increase water flow; remove affected tissue with clean tools; treat with antibiotics if severe
Parasitic Infection
Visible parasites on polyps, reduced polyp extension, lethargy, tissue damage
Dip coral in freshwater or medicated bath; improve water quality and flow; quarantine if possible; maintain stable parameters
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow growth, pale coloration, reduced polyp extension despite adequate light
Increase supplemental feeding frequency; test and adjust calcium, alkalinity, and trace elements; ensure adequate phytoplankton availability
